VARENTUM / PROPOSED WEEK 3 / ORIGINAL FICTIONAL SCENARIO
A veteran challenges your plan.
Earn trust by taking the concern seriously, checking the source, and closing the loop.
Sample rehearsal and field assignment for discussion. This is not an accepted lesson, technical instruction, customer story, or test for promotion. Do the rehearsal away from hazardous work.
Short lesson: expertise and accountability can work together
You do not have to win an argument to lead. Ask what the experienced worker is seeing. Separate the fact from the assumption. Verify the current plan with the person authorized to decide. Then tell the crew what changes, who owns the next step, and when you will check back.
The situation
You have just been promoted from the crew. Tomorrow's layout plan is ready for briefing when an experienced worker says, "That location does not match the sheet we used yesterday." Your former peer wants to start now to protect the schedule. The print on the table has no visible revision date. You can coordinate the crew, but you cannot approve design changes.
For a project engineer: you coordinate the information and decision request; the foreman retains crew direction and the assigned technical authority retains approval.
Rehearse before opening the worked response
- What will you say first to the experienced worker and your former peer?
- What is observed? What remains uncertain? Which affected step stays held?
- What source and authorized person will resolve the discrepancy?
- Who does what next, when will you check back, and how will the crew confirm understanding?
Open an example after your attempt
"Thanks for catching that. Show me the difference. We will hold the affected layout while we verify the current released sheet with the assigned authority. I will bring the discrepancy and decision request; let's confirm an update time before we separate."
Capture the two sources, discrepancy, hold, decision owner and check-back. After an authorized decision, record the verified source and conditions for release, brief the crew, and ask someone to explain the first action and stop condition. Keep unrelated work moving only within its approved plan.
This is one defensible response, not required wording. Do not invent a release time or override a stop-work concern.
Change the facts and try again
The dated sheet is confirmed current, but the worker identifies a physical condition it does not address. Rehearse your response again: the document alone does not resolve changed conditions. Keep the affected step held, route the new information to the assigned authority, and rebrief after verified closure.
FIELD ASSIGNMENT / ONE REAL CONVERSATION
Use the behavior in your actual work
Choose a normal planning or handoff conversation you are authorized to lead. Invite an experienced worker's concern, verify the source, agree one owner and check-back, and confirm understanding. Do not create a hazard, provoke a conflict, or change technical authority for this exercise.
Work artifact: a brief decision record
Date / task / your role and authority: ____________________________
Concern and observed facts (use task references; omit personal details):
Current source / revision and unresolved question:
Affected step held / decision authority / next owner / check-back:
Verified decision / release conditions / read-back / closure date:
Optional observation from someone you trust
If you choose feedback, ask someone you trust to observe the conversation. They do not need access to your private coaching. You may instead reflect privately; no sign-off is required. Record date, task context, behavior, help needed, and the agreed next attempt.
| Behavior to observe | Rating and evidence |
|---|---|
| Invites the experienced person's concern and listens without defensiveness. | ______________________ |
| Verifies the source and respects hold/release and role boundaries. | ______________________ |
| Names the owner, check-back and conditions; confirms understanding. | ______________________ |
| Closes the concern with retrievable evidence. | ______________________ |
Use: absent / prompted / independent / repeated under changed conditions. One successful attempt cannot earn the last rating; record a separate observed variation. Not observed? Record "not observed" and consider another suitable opportunity. Correction should be private; intervene immediately when required by the employer's safety procedures.
Private reflection and personalized debrief
Keep your reflection in your coaching space: What did you actually say? What did you learn from the worker? Where did you need help? What will you change next time? The debrief should name one demonstrated move, one gap and one dated retry. Solo uses AI coaching; company cohort responses require founder approval.
Reporting: keep this task record and supervisor observation under agreed employer procedures. Do not attach private check-ins or debriefs to sponsor reports or promotion decisions. The current company portal does not expose individual observation responses.
